Felicity's operation goes well

Earlier today Felicity had her operation to close a hole in her heart. She went into surgery around 11 this morning and it took about four hours to perform. The surgeons successfully closed not one, but three holes. She is doing well but the next few days are very important for her recovery. Matt is back at work tomorrow and Ange has been able to stay overnight at Westmead. As you can imagine it has been an exhausting experience - please pray that they would trust God and pray for Felicity in her recovery.

Men's Friday Fellowship - Friday, 2 May. 8-9pm

Conflict resolution is a modern term – but the Bible has much to say about this. Acts 14:21-15:21 tells us how conflict in the early Church was resolved. This passage has much to say to the modern Church and the modern world. We will be looking at this passage as well as watching  two short videos produced for African Enterprise, giving an insight into how God is working in Africa today.

Bring Your Bible

Just a reminder to bring your Bible to church. We use the New International Version if you are able to bring your own. Don't worry if you don't have a Bible, you can use one of the ones we have.

Mission Prayer Meeting - Zimbabwe

Our Mission Prayer Meeting starts up again on Sunday 5-5.45pm in the upper meeting room. This week we will be praying for Zimbabwe along with others from all around the world.

The Most Rev. Thabo Makgoba of Capetown, South Africa released this statement for help:

"The plight of the people of Zimbabwe is heart-breaking. Already bruised, broken and crushed by oppression and economic hardship before the elections, they are now even more divided, despondent and, in many cases, hopeless than they were before. At a time of growing global hunger, their situation is particularly acute – four million Zimbabweans depend on food aid and NGOs are reporting that in some areas political violence is making it difficult to supply food...."

New Church Calendar

I've added a new church calendar to the blog. It doesn't have much on it at this stage, but I'm hoping that it will be helpful down the track.

Open Week Over - but why not visit church anyway?

Open Week at Summer Hill Anglican Church finished last night, but the church family are always 'open' to newcomers and visitors, so why not visit next Sunday, 9:30am?

The service yesterday was brilliant. We serve, praise and live for the amazing risen Lord Jesus and it was wonderful to have so many visiting families join us! We heard a stirring talk from the Bible on who Jesus thinks he is. Jesus declares himself to be God as he displays the authority to forgive sin, and backs this bold statement up by physically healing a paralytic man. Check out the part of the Bible yourself: Mark 2:1-12

The place was buzzing afterwards with an indoor jumping castle, a BBQ, and a fiercely competitive bridge building competition with paddle pop sticks and hot glue guns. I noticed the dads around the bridge construction tables were very keen to help their kids make the strongest bridge!

Last night the Christianity Explored course started, and this will run for the next few weeks. This course is for people who would like to check out what Christianity is all about, and is a good place to ask questions. If you missed last night you can still join in next week - Sunday, 6:30pm, in the hall next to the church building.

Well, this is my last post. Our team from Moore College had a fabulous week helping out the church. We thank Chris and Beth for their support and guidance throughout the week, and we thank the church for billeting and feeding us all week!

Praise God that we can call all Christians our brother and sister thanks to the grace and forgiveness we have received from God.

Cheers

Christ Files night

The Christ Files evening on Thursday was a blast! Well I'm a historian by trade so I found the presentation by Dr John Dickson a fascinating tour through the historical reliability of the earliest documents about Jesus. (I also thought one of the MC's was a spunk, but I'm biased). We had yummy chocolates and coffee, and it was a great opportunity to discuss the issues that John had raised about what sources we can trust and how we can know who Jesus was and what he did.

Yesterday we set the World Views survey near the fountain at the Summer Hill shops. We had a lot of people stop by and take part, and as the afternoon went on some high school students came along too. As in Ashfield, we had great conversations about what people believe about the world we live in, and also about Jesus and what Christians believe. To protect their privacy I won't go into detail about all the conversations we had. Yesterday they were several Nihilists who we spoke to. A Nihilist essentially believes that any meaning we give to life or people or to the idea of a god is meaningless. It's a difficult way to live, as it can be very depressing to believe that there is no point searching for truth/meaning/god etc as there is none to be found. The message and genuine hope of Jesus is in stark contrast to this position, and our team members had the opportunity to share this.

Last night we had fun at the family pizza and movie night. We set up a big screen on the grass behind the church building. The main movie was Valiant, and we also watched a silly short film starring the puppet Alfred. I'll try and get it put up on the blog.

The Blokes BBQ Brekkie was brilliant this morning (or so I'm told, I was still sleeping!) Matt Lemsing from our team gave a short talk called 'Jesus did a trade', and afterwards the guys stuck around for a working bee in the grounds. The most fun part of the working bee was being able to go all the way up in the huge spire in the church building!

Right now we're doing the final preparation for the special Open Church service tomorrow morning, 9:30am. Make sure you come along, there will be a talk called 'Who Does Jesus Think He Is?' at church, Kids Church for your children while the service is on, and a free lunch and jumping castle afterwards!

Just remember to change your clocks for daylight saving before you go to bed!

Cheers

The World Views survey was a hit on Monday and Tuesday at the Ashfield shops. Our team had heaps of conversations with people about what they think of the world, and were able to discuss with them how we see the world through the lens of the cross. The people who stopped to chat had various views and religions, and some hadn't thought much about issues of morality or if there is a God etc. Our team members had some really meaningful conversations with the people who stopped, and I found it great to be able to listen to how other people are thinking about the world we live in. We had 2 ways to live fliers in different languages, invites to the Open Week activities and over the two days gave out forty free New Testaments to the people we spoke to who wanted a Bible. Praise God that so many people gave us their time and were intrigued to stop and talk with us, and we were able to share of his love for all people with them.

While this was happening, some of our team stayed at the church building as it's open to the public all week, and some visited Trinity Grammar again to learn more about being a school Chaplain. Also, four of our guys were invited to a weekly Bible study with the Friendship Group who meet at Summer Hill Anglican Church. The members were studying Romans 3:1-20, and discussing how we shouldn't just keep on sinning just because God's grace is limitless. Some of the members shared their testimonies and it was a great encouragement to our team members to see the members faithfully meeting together and living their lives for God.

On Tuesday afternoon some team members went to the park near the Summer Hill shops and handed out invites and balloons and chat to the families who were around. The guys had carefully attached one balloon to an invitation in the church building, but as soon as they had gone outside the whole bunch tangled up and it became more like a dread lock of balloons than a bunch!

The 'True Fulfillment' women's event on Tuesday night was great! Our group was about 35 women. We met at the church building and enjoyed yummy cheese and some apple and rose iced tea, then we wandered down to Muse cafe in Summer Hill. Loren Becroft from our team, who is a 4th year student at Moore College, gave an excellent short talk from Mark on how Jesus healed the paralytic man, but that he first healed his sins as that was his biggest problem. We considered the idea that true fulfillment isn't found in the nice things that God gives us in the world, but it's found in Jesus healing our sin through dying and rising again for us. Then came as much cake and dessert as we wanted, great coffee and lots of chatting!

We have had today (Wednesday) off, but we have lots more in store for Thursday. Some of our team members have been sick this week, so hopefully they would have been able to rest up today and be rearing to go for tomorrow.

If you're in the Summer Hill area and you've always wondered how much we can know from history about who Jesus was and what he did, come along to the Christ Files event on tomorrow evening - 7:45pm, free, in the church building, coffee and chocolates will be served. See you there!

Cheers
