Church in the Hall - an exercise in flexibility

On Sunday we all found out what the surprise at church would be - we met in the hall! The surprise will not be long lived since it is only a temporary thing. The idea is to be in the hall for another three weeks as a training exercise. The two main goals are:
  1. being able to do new things together as a church
  2. seeing our church building with new eyes when we go back

I know that there might be lots of positives and negatives about being in the hall, this is really just secondary to the two things above. What did you think of it?

Hi Chris - I thought that the meeting on Sunday in the whole was a great idea and really helped me see that 'church' on Sunday is really just about the people and not the location.. The music sounded really good in the more enclosed location and it had a great cosy feel about it - though would have been cosier is the heater worked!! There wasn't much room for more newcomers - so a potential problem for reaching out with just the one service, but on the whole a really challenging and worthwhile training exercise

It is interesting that our singing isn't as much the problem as the space in which we sing. The smaller space just sounds better. I can also see why the growing congregation back in the 1880s wanted more space! Thanks for the feedback.

I think Chruch in the hall on Sunday was good. A nice way to think about the history of our Church and a helpful reminder that Church is about the people, not the building.

Thinking back to the 1880s, I was wondering how they had the hall set up on Sundays for church. I imagine it was quite different to how we would have had it last week, but probably still quite flexible since I think the school met in there mid-week!

I very much enjoyed the feeling of being in a cramped space, helped me really feel the growth that has occured over the past year, I can see many positives in the different space, it definately makes you appreciate the church building. As merrin and nathan said, The church is the body of christ meeting together, not the building we meet in, a good lesson for us all to se and learn. Whilst i enjoyed church on sunday in the hall, i will look forward to the return to the church building.

I think it would be a particularly good space for an evening congregation, when one eventuates

I did ask my Jack(4) what he thought of being in the hall. He said it was too small and he liked the big church better... he is exactly right! There were a few people who were quite upset at not being in the church building and I've made the decision to go back there for this Sunday. I've put up a post to this effect.
