One to one?

How important is one-to-one discipleship in the Christian life? Should churches make it an integral part of their 'program'.

Our new church model of how people work is described by "seek, share, strengthen, serve". What I'm wondering is if the other description of 'stuff we do' is still something we stick by - that is, the one with "24/7, Growth Group, ..." etc.

I think one to ones are great, and would love to have someone from church to be accountable to and to encourage in that way - but I think we also need to be wary of expecting too many different things of people. I think if you wanted to do it you might introduce it within the context of growth groups (as in, this is part of what we want growth groups to do)? The idea is that it's not an extra thing to do, but just a new shape to something we're already doing to help us grow in Christ.

Good observation! The problem is defining the relationship between the gospel message and our programs. The 'old' description of the stuff we do is really a statement of our programs whereas the slogan 'seek, share, strengthen, serve' is a summary of what it means for people to become and grow as Christians.

I suppose I'm trying to revisit the question of our core 'programs' and wondering if one-to-one would be good/should be part of it.

I like the idea of one-to-one discipleship springing out of Growth Groups but equally they could spring out of our Sunday meetings or be the first point of contact we have with people (seek/share in the context of one-to-one).

I really appreciate the need not to burden people with too much stuff but only what is going to be beneficial for people. Another way of putting it might be: what do we drop so we can do one-to-one discipleship?

I also like the idea of it being a church culture thing and not a formal 'program' thing. But if it is an integral part of our church program we should just be up front about it. All just thoughts....
